ABA AUTHOR INTERVIEW WITH MARIE-NICOLE RYAN

Kiki: What is your favorite genre to read in, and what is it about that genre that attracts you to it? If you like a specific mix of genres, please state that particular combination.

Marie-Nicole:  I love reading romantic suspense and mystery/suspense, although I find I don’t read as much mystery/suspense as I used to. If I’m reading a straight contemporary romance, my brain keeps inventing suspense elements for the story.

Kiki: What is your favorite author to read in that genre, and why? Also, please tell me a little about the best book by that author you have read.

Marie-Nicole:  Right now I’m on a B. J. Daniels kick. She’s a Harlequin Intrigue author and I love her stories set in Montana. I just finished the Winchester Ranch series, and I truly enjoyed each one of those six interconnected stories. The last one, WINCHESTER CHRISTMAS WEDDING, answered a lot of questions which were first asked in the first of the series, GUN-SHY BRIDE.

Kiki: Do you have a Favorite Book of All Time? Of course, please tell us what about that book makes it your favorite.

Marie-Nicole: Favorite Book of All Time? I think it would have to be Anya Seton’s GREEN DARKNESS. It dealt with reincarnation and how the past lives of the hero and heroine affected their lives in modern times. I’ve always been fascinated with reincarnation and enjoy seeing it used in a fictional setting.

Kiki: What is the best book you read last month, and would you recommend it to a friend?

Marie-Nicole:  I’m not sure if it was in December or not, but the best book I’ve read in the last several months was Annie Solomon’s TWO LETHAL LIES. I recommend it to anyone who doesn’t have high blood pressure and/or a heart condition.  It is a total roller coaster ride.

Kiki: What are your reading habits like? For example, how many books do you read on average in a week, what format do you prefer to read in, what time of day do you read, and what setting is ideal for you to get lost in that book?

Marie-Nicole: I read a couple of books a week, or try to anyway. I have a Kindle and seldom pick up a paperback or hardback book. The time of day varies. I read while waiting in doctor waiting rooms (my mother is elderly and has many various appointments). I also read when doing laundry in my apartment building laundry room. Other than that I read at night in bed. My Sheltie would prefer I turn off the light instead of reading, so maybe in the future I’ll have to buy something that’s backlit just to humor her.

Kiki: If pressed, could you choose a favorite from the books you have written? Why is it your favorite?

Marie-Nicole:  If I have to pick a favorite, I guess it would have to be the first one I completed (second published), SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS. Because it was first and truly the book of my heart.

Kiki: How do you become inspired to write?

Marie-Nicole: Guilt because I’ve spend the last year trying to sell my house and have lost focus. I also moved to another state to help my elderly mother since she can’t drive anymore. Fear because I’ve lost a year of my writing life while I piddled with my current WIP. Fortunately I am settled and now am beginning to get back in the mode. Guilt and fear aren’t the best reasons for inspiration, but they’ll have to do for now.

Kiki: What part of the story do you think is your strength to write?

Marie-Nicole: That’s assuming I have a area of strength. Okay, that’s some author self-doubt creeping in here. I’m going to say dialogue because that’s what comes to me first. Yeah, I’m one of those dingbats who “hears” their characters’ voices.

Kiki: Please share with ABA readers something I did not think to ask you about.

Marie-Nicole:  I’m really enjoying small town life after living in Nashville, TN, for several decades. This is my hometown, and no matter what Thomas Wolfe wrote, you really can go home again.

Blurb from  LOVE ME IF YOU CAN
Nashville sizzles in the summer. No wonder Tess and Scott combust.

Nashville Homicide Detective Tess O’Malley has a lot to prove. She comes from a long line of police officers, including her father and older brothers. First she and her partner are taken off a high profile case and sidelined with a cold case instead. After reviewing the files, she’s certain her cold case is connected to the current one, and she sets out to prove it. Too bad it means locking horns with a handsome PI who could win her heart and derail her career.

Scott Holt is all business when it comes to running his family’s PI firm. When the lovely Detective O’Malley comes to question him about his possible involvement in her cold case, he has everything but business on his mind. Like locking lips with the fiery redhead.

  1. Thanks for having me, Kiki. It's obvious I need an editor for even the simplest blog post. "Spent" not "spend."
