MY INTERVIEW WITH KATIE SALIDAS

Kiki: What is your favorite genre to read in, and what is it about that genre that attracts you to it? If you like a specific mix of genres, please state that particular combination.

Katie: It’s not so much a genre thing for me it’s a creature thing. I am addicted to vampires, be they horror icons, or lust-worthy bad boys. There is just something about those creatures of the night that attract me. And the fact that they are so chameleonic makes them all that much more interesting. I can read a romance, horror, urban fantasy, and erotic novel all with vampires as their main character. I love it!

Kiki: What is your favorite author to read in that genre, and why? Also, please tell me a little about the best book by that author you have read.

Katie: Some of my favorites include:
Anne Rice
Charlaine Harris
Laurel K. Hamilton
Christine Feehan
Lara Adrian

Kiki: Do you have a Favorite Book of All Time? Of course, please tell us what about that book makes it your favorite.

Katie: I’ve got a soft spot for the books that got me started in my love of Vampires. I still occasionally dust off and read my old copy of Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice. That book is my all-time favorite because of the history and detail she put into it and her characters.

Kiki: What is the best book you read last month, and would you recommend it to a friend?

Katie: I didn’t get the chance to read too many books last month, Christmas prep and all, but I did recently read a great sequel novel by another indie like myself. Denise Verrico’s  Twilight of the Gods.

You’ll find a lot of great novels from Indie’s so yes, I’d definitely recommend it.

Kiki: What are your reading habits like? For example, how many books do you read on average in a week, what format do you prefer to read in, what time of day do you read, and what setting is ideal for you to get lost in that book?

Katie: My reading habits vary so much from day to day. It’s all about finding the time to read. I sneak in 5-10 minutes here and there while I’m waiting to get my daughter after school. If she’s got a dance class that’s a whole glorious 45 minutes of quiet reading time. Some weeks are better than others. As far as how I like to read, I’m definitely a series girl. I love to collect the whole series and read books back to back to back. Sometimes I’ll wait until a series already has a few books for me to read because I just hate waiting for books. Right now I’m attempting to finish off the Charlaine Harris ( Sookie Stackhouse) novels.

Kiki: If pressed, could you chose a favorite from the books you have written? Why is it your favorite?

Katie: Oh that’s just not fair. It’s like trying to pick from your kids. I guess though, if you put a gun to my head I’d probably say the current one I’m working on. I put so much into the books I write while I am writing them, that I feel I’m there with my characters, in the story. I have sleepless nights while I am working through plots and character conflicts. Right now I am working on a vampire romance called Karma & Melodies. It’s a fun little romance novella I’d like to have out for Valentine’s day.

Kiki: How do you become inspired to write?

Katie: Everything inspires. It’s just a matter of working with it. The novella, Karma & Melodies was inspired by a concert I desperately wanted to go to. I couldn’t make it but was able to catch scenes from it on YouTube.  Hunters & Prey was inspired by a question I asked in my first book Immortalis Carpe Noctem, “could vampire’s and humans really ever be friends?” You can find inspiration everywhere!

Kiki: What part of the story do you think is your strength to write?

Katie: I’m good with beginnings. I feel I can start a story pretty well. Of course, that is up to you the reader to really decide though. I took to heart the teachings of some very good critiquing buddies, “start in medias res.” Start in the moment that will hook the readers. Give them the goods up front and then filter in the backstory and less exciting details.
